Obviously. But, wounding my pride, Fallout co-creator Tim Cain offers a less radical take in a new YouTube video about the psychology of video game design, positing that no game is truly "good" – "there's just a good game for you and a bad game for you," Cain says.
They don't bring it up and go, 'Yeah, this is a problem, but it doesn't really affect your enjoyment of the game.' It was listed as the worst game of all time by PC World in 2006, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and FHM magazine, and was ranked as the second-worst movie game on the "Top Ten Worst Movie Games" (first being Charlie's Angels) by GameTrailers. It was also ranked the second-worst game of all time by GameTrailers; the title for first-worst went to Superman 64. Some considered it so bad that the title screen was the only good part of the game.Hyde based on the player's ability to either avoid or cause damage. While getting decent reviews when released, the game gained largely negative retrospective reviews, with reviewers criticizing bad graphics, confusing gameplay, and poor use of the characters and setting. Many of its games also have poor controls and graphics, and are plagued by bizarre glitches and technical problems, with some games being impossible to complete and others that will not load. Kill Screen described all the games as "shit", and Atari HQ called it "really, horribly, incredibly bad." The game frequently appears on lists compiling the worst games ever, and Atari HQ called it the worst game of all time.Eurogamer gave Lula 3D a 2 out of 10, jokingly declaring that its low quality and immature humor (such as the "Bouncin' Boobs Technology" advertised on its packaging) made the game feel like it was developed by and intended for 12-year-old boys. PC Zone gave the game a 3.1 out of 10, believing that it was "oddly compelling", but "so inexorably, mindbogglingly ignorant of how either real games or real sex works that it spread-eagles itself a fair way into the 'so-bad-it's good' category."Eurogamer gave all four games, including Ninjabread Man, a 1 out of 10, concluding that the games were "dross of the highest order. Rip offs at budget price. We deserve more than this. I've heard people perking up at Ninjabread Man because of its punny name. Don't be fooled." On Metacritic, Ninjabread Man has an aggregate score of 20 out of 100 from six critic reviews. A reimagining of the Bomberman series, Bomberman: Act Zero received negative reception from critics for its long loading times, bad collision detection, forgettable soundtrack, use of the same textures and graphics for every stage, tedious and repetitive gameplay, lack of a save feature, unbalanced A.I.
Some infamous examples include games as recent as 2023’s The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum and as old as 1982’s E.T. game for the Atari 2600 – which was so bad it helped cause the 1983 video game crash in North America.
Even we don’t play the bottom of the barrel stuff on Steam and mobile phones, so the actual worst video game of all time is undoubtedly something nobody has ever heard of. Superman 64 and Custer’s Revenge are terrible but they were obscure even at the time and it’s hard to believe that everyone that voted for them has actually played them, it’s just they’re famous for being bad.Another is even willing to bat for the Gollum game, arguing it’s ‘nowhere near bad enough to be the 13th worst game of all time. I played it and it’s just a janky kinda bad to mediocre action adventure. However, more video games are being made now than ever before and if you go dumpster diving through digital storefronts, you will find some incredibly bad games, that make Gollum look like God Of War.If Redfall is one of the worst video games you’ve ever played, you need to play more bad games (Bethesda)

Hopefully, someone in the quality-assurance divisions of several game companies got fired over letting these titles slip through the cracks. These probably wouldn't pass muster as coasters or clay pigeons. Gaming humorists, take note — if you want to make a statement about how bad a game is, just say "I'd rather play [insert name of nearly any game from this list here]" for cheap, yet instant, laughs.Among the things that went wrong was its reliance on the CGA color system which restricted the system and game to two palettes of four onscreen colors at a time, crudely-drawn sprites (including a Donkey Kong which looked more like a werewolf than a monkey), sound design consisting of beeps and clicks and an out-of-tune rendition of "How high can you get?", twitchy gameplay, a keyboard that causes Mario to walk permanently until you press up, down, or the jump key, and overly quick and aggressive fireballs, especially on 100m. The only redeeming factor regarding the palettes is that the infamoALF for the Sega Master System takes The Problem with Licensed Games beyond the norm, and into levels only games like Superman 64 would know about. What would otherwise be a short, twenty minute adventure game is drawn out by Fake Difficulty by means of convoluted controls, bad programming, and Goddamned Bats which become Demonic Spiders due to Alf being able to take only one hit.One of the worst video game RPGs made, according to Japanese fans, is Hoshi wo Miru Hito, which can be translated as Stargazer. The background graphics make no attempt to blend the tiles and when combined with the dark, dull palette choice ends up looking abysmal. The battle system is clunky, slow, and unforgiving. Select the wrong battle option? Too bad, there's no button to back up.
The Bad Game Hall of Fame is dedicated to giving bad games the due process they deserve. Through examining their history, reviewing their contents, and measuring their impact, we hope to bring about a better understanding of these oft-dismissed releases.
There’s the odd chance we’ve all been overlooking a hidden gem here — associating the title with the sorry state of its creators, and not giving the game its proper consideration. That sounds like a case for the Bad Game Hall of Fame; where we endeavor to judge games on their own merits, and give them a fair shake when no one else will!Perhaps there’s an alternate timeline in which American Laser Games continues to produce FMV games into the present day — where LaserDisc still rules supreme over the home video formats, cowboys are still considered the epitome of cool, and the Semag-Resal Empire leaves our pitiful planet alone in their campaign of galactic conquest. But enough for now about wishful thinking and what could’ve been: It’s high time we travel back to the past, and explore the disc-based dead end that is Mazer. http://badgamehalloffame.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/3do_mazer_00.mp4A funny thing happens sometimes when I observe the past bethrough a modern lens: I happen upon leads on apparently legendary games – be they good or bad – which seem seminal in the histories of their respective consoles. And hell, just to be thorough; we’ll also cover attempts to bring the game to Apple computers, between a canceled IIGS port and a Bethesda Softworks-published Macintosh release. It’s high time we cover another high fantasy game on the Bad Game Hall of Fame (it’s been a minute since we wrote about Arthur’s Quest: Battle for the Kingdom), and I reckon Sword of Sodan is as fine a selection as any to pull from the stone.
An absolutely terrible wannabe live service game that I only bought because it was by PlatinumGames, who I usually love. (Also, it was cheap.) I really don’t know how it turned out so bad but that seemed to be the point at which their fortunes changed and anyone that was any good started to leave.

One poorly executed entry, be it due to weak storytelling, aggressive monetization or broken promises, can tarnish the reputation of an entire franchise. Many series have fallen victim to this, and the topic is currently drawing a lot of attention on Reddit.
A Reddit thread titled "Which entry to a game series was so bad it spoiled the name of its whole legacy and faith in the developers?" is currently making waves, gathering over 900 comments in just twelve hours. When players enjoy a great game, they naturally build expectations for future titles.> Expert Reviews and News on Laptops, Smartphones and Tech Innovations > News > News Archive > Newsarchive 2025 09 > These games are so bad, they ruined the reputation of an entire seriesThread creator u/Ltaustin117 cites Halo 5: Guardians and Borderlands 3 as personal disappointments. Both franchises are considered gaming icons, so expectations for their sequels were understandably high. While the gameplay isn’t entirely without merit, he notes that the weak storytelling alone was enough to shake his trust in the series. The ongoing Reddit discussion goes beyond isolated failures, highlighting what many see as deeper issues within the gaming industry, particularly live service models, aggressive monetization and a lack of creative direction. Gamers once had a strong sense of trust in legacy studios like EA, Blizzard and BioWare, but a single misstep in a beloved series can mark a personal turning point, drastically shifting expectations for future releases.
Over the years, some video games have come out to such bad reviews or with such massive problems that the price got cut almost as soon as they arrived.
There are some games that fans realize are going to be duds well ahead of release, and publishers need to offer discounts just to entice people to take a look. Other times, overhyped games will flop hard when players discover they don't live up to unreasonable expectations, and studios will offer discounts to bring those expectations back down to Earth. Bad sales aren't a guarantee that a game isn't any good. Some of our favorite games from the '90s were mega-flops. Usually, though, if a critical mass of gamers is avoiding a new release, there's a good reason for it. From bad release windows to simple bad gameplay, these games got immediate discounts for reasons that are easy to see and completely justified.Almost a decade later, fans of "Titanfall 2" still talk about what went wrong with the game, and most of them blame EA for releasing a niche multiplayer game right between the launch of brand new entries in the "Battlefield" and "Call of Duty" franchises. "Titanfall 2" is proof that bad release timing can be just as detrimental as bad gameplay.Video Games So Bad They Were Discounted Immediately
Of course, many of the most hated games ever are much older. One infamously bad title, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600, was released all the way back in 1982.
The '90s also had their fair share of notoriously bad games, including an entry in a franchise that's about to step back into the spotlight. The Bubsy video game franchise is making a comeback almost thirty years after the infamous Bubsy 3D.Over the years, there's been plenty of debate about which title is the worst video game of all time. In recent years, contenders have included 2024's Concord, an expensive, middling live service game that was shut down less than two weeks after launch.Bubsy 3D was released on November 25, 1996, for the PlayStation, and even back then, its reception was lukewarm at best. It didn’t take long for Bubsy 3D to become seen as a pariah in the platforming genre, with some video game publications quickly declaring it among the worst video games of all time.

After being in development for over nine years and under immense pressure and crunch, the game was released in an unplayable state. NPCs would be T-posing, cops would manifest from inside the walls of buildings, and sometimes the game would just break and corrupt your save. Cyberpunk 2077 was in such a bad state that it was temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store a week later. The development was tumultuous, with a ten-year cycle, and eventually was offshored to a third-party developer when the team, Running With Scissors, couldn’t keep up with the cost. Boy, did it show: Postal 3 switched from a first-person perspective to third-person, it was linear, and it tried to implement a morality system that failed. The game was so bad that even the original studio distanced itself from it.Some games are considered ‘bad’, but you can still find a few redeeming qualities to enjoy, like the music or combat. Yet, some are so unenjoyable, so devoid of anything significant, that you can’t bring yourself to find anything of worth. We go over some of the most troubled developments that ended up with terrible video game launches.

There are a lot of bad video games, but not many are so bad that they can't even crack a 25% on Metacritic. These games, however, are that bad.
Tecmo was an early pioneer of fast-paced sports games that were just enough like their original sport to satisfy purists but were fun and light enough for anyone to play. With that kind of history, Tecmo seemed like a good company to attempt a modern take on NBA Jam, which it tried in 2010 with NBA Unrivaled. It also failed miserably. Unrivaled is just a joyless, half-hearted mess that would've been bad enough on its own, but also released the same year as EA's own NBA Jam reboot-- which wasn't perfect, but did what Unrivaled was trying to do only much, much better.Developers seem to have forgotten that there was a reason Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was such a revelation. Games like this aren't easy to get right, and are bad far more often than they are good. Sadly, even in a post-THPS world where there was a clear template to follow, most still didn't even come close to getting it right. One of the unfortunate side effects of the Wii being such a huge seller and catching on among the "casual" crowd is that a lot of cheap Nintendo party game collections were shoveled onto it in hopes of being snatched up by the unsuspecting family members who didn't know any better. Many of them sold well, which guaranteed that more of them were made. Some of this carried over onto the Wii U, the result of which is one of the absolute worst of this already largely bad genre: Game Party Champions. The internet is fond of reducing all video games to being either awesome or terrible. However, there is a relatively small percentage of games that are truly and objectively bad.

I completed it, which was not easy given the horrible CD-I remote controller, and it´s a very important game for my childhood. It´s also horribly bad and broken. It has an interesting story and world, and it actually could have being a good game, if it wasn´t on CD-I. Time based puzzles and shooting on a remote controller that was horrible and tons of game over scenarios (the main guy literally had a bomb on his head about to blown up, and you had to gain more time on the bomb constantly), the levels of frustration this game can produce goes beyond anything I have ever played, and belive me I have play plenty. So there you have it, true bad games. Now let´s see who can top that, cause I bet I´m one of the last living motherf***ers to own a working CD-I and it´s the worst "console" ever made, like literally any single CD-I game would destroy whatever idea most people have about a bad game.

Games like Bubsy 3D and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest have a bad reputation, but they get way more hate than they actually deserve.
Some video games become lightning rods for negativity, and while the criticism they get isn't completely unfair, they end up getting way more hate than they deserve. More often than not, these games aren't even bad; they just fall short of other titles in their franchises or fail to live up to expectations.Titles like Bubsy 3D and Castlevania 64 have been labeled some of the worst games of all time, but they're actually not that bad and can even be pretty fun. These games aren't necessarily must-plays, but they're a lot better than their reputation suggests.Chrono Cross launched to rave reviews in 1999, with outlets like GameSpot giving it a perfect score. Over time, however, its reputation has steadily diminished, and while it's not always labeled as bad, it's unfairly overlooked. In fact, many early reviews for Bubsy 3D were fairly positive, with outlets like PSExtreme calling it "an experience no action platform gamer should miss." Bubsy 3D came out in November 1996, not long after Super Mario 64, and while its 3D graphics seemed solid enough at the time, it quickly became clear that 3D platformers were capable of much more. While Bubsy 3D has aged badly and isn't worth going back to, most of the hate it's received came long after the game was released.

ET was a victim of hype and a scapegoat of the first video game bubble; it was one of (if not the) first video games based off a popular film. It was perfectly playable if you had a manual. Compared to what was released at that time, it wasn't all that bad.Sure it was bad, vapid and stupid, but not awful, not even close. 3/10 from me. It did have an endearing quality of a sort, well as much as an lazy film cash-in could at least. The truly worst games (or films, books, TV shows etc) are repugnant or outright evil ones; the last Duke Nukem game had you kill a rape victim which prompted Duke to make a lame abortion joke.I've also played video games which promoted a "white power" or Jihadist agenda, even if they weren't already technically nearly unplayable and clearly ripped off assets elsewhere (they were and the did), I would sooner call them the "worst games" I have ever played. ... E.T. is horrifically bad.
As amazing as the narrative is, without good gameplay, it’s just a bad video game. That’s because gameplay is king. Whether you’re exploring the eerie streets of Yharnam in Bloodborne or fighting mythical beings in God of War, the gameplay needs to be exhilarating.
Discover games that delivered great stories but stumbled with clunky combat, weak design, and frustrating gameplay.Unfortunately, though, there have been many games that have made this mistake. They succeeded in storytelling but failed when it came to gameplay. Either because they had dull combat, poor level design, or game-breaking bugs. This list features some of the biggest misses of the video game world. One of the best vampire games is 2019’s Vampyr. It’s an incredible experience where you play as a doctor turned vampire in the early 20th century. Throughout the narrative, you are presented with several dozen choices about who to kill, who to manipulate, and who to pit against each other.Your choices have a direct effect on the world and its other NPCs, and it’s also entirely possible to finish the game without killing anyone. There are innumerable good things one can say about Vampyr’s story.
