"Bad" games you hold particular regard for? | ResetEra

Main Post: "Bad" games you hold particular regard for? | ResetEra

Top Comment: Games don't have to be fun for them to impress you. They don't have to be coherent or even cooperative to the player. They just have to effectuate something compelling, a "strangeness" that draws you in, that wants you to illuminate an angle of interest beyond its inadequate "gameness". Whether...

The Worst Video Games of All Time [Updated 2024] (According to Average User Ratings on Backloggd.com)

Main Post:

Link: #1-#36

Link: #37-#72

Backloggd.com is a website that allows users to rate, review, log and keep track of the games they’ve collected and/or played. For the previous 2 years, I’ve made a post about the “Bottom 36” games on the site. (36 being the number of games shown on a single page of the site). This year, I’ve expanded my post to the “Bottom 72” (2 pages worth on the site). The average rating for each game is determined by averaging the website’s user’s ratings for a game and then ranking based on that average score. A game must have an adequate number of user ratings to qualify for ranking. The site also does not cover all games ever made. (There is a policy to exclude PSN “Easy Platinum Shovelware” (with notable exceptions) from the site. While many truly obscure games that do not have an entry on IGDB are not on the site’s database of games; these include many “Steam Shovelware Asset Flips” that have simply gone completely under the radar.)

Bottom 36: 2022

Bottom 36: 2023

Since last year, the site has continued to gain more popularity, so more games have reached the threshold of number of reviews required to make it onto the list (as required by the site). Additionally, there have now been a few new games from 2023 that have made it onto the list (including Redfall, which was brand new when I made my post last year, so was missing despite many Redditors commenting wondering where it was).

Below is the list of the worst 72 rated games of all time on the website. Included is the ranking of the game (from worst to least worst), the game’s title (or the name it is better known as), the year of the game’s release and the number of places in the ranking it has changed from last year. (nc = no change. “new” may refer to games that were positioned #37-#72 last year as well as new entries to the list.)

What's the worst game you ever played?

Main Post:

As the title says, for me it has to be the crew 2, I play a lot of driving sim games, and the feel of how the cars drive in the crew 2 just puts me off it.

Top Comment: I’ve been gaming over 40 years and some of the stuff we used to get back in the ZX Spectrum days would blow your mind. The industry at that point was a completely different beast and a lot of games were effectively homebrew. Things frequently would crash or be genuinely broken. Levels would be incomplete. A bad game was genuinely unplayable as opposed to just below the high standards that the modern gaming industry generally hit. I remember Firebird released a compilation of their worst Spectrum games called “Don’t buy this” 😅

Some games that are universally considered bad/mid tier but you absolutely love

Main Post:

Basically what the title says. Give me some weird recommendations that you love that aren’t fan favorites. I’m talking about tie-in movie games for the PS2. I’m talking Paper Mario Sticker Star, and games of a similar quality. I’m talking DS “ports” of console games. Give me your worst

Dragon Age 2

Worst game ever made? (Any system)

Main Post:

What is the worst video game that has been made within the past, let's say, 20 years and why?

Top Comment: What's being worst? There are thousands of shovelware trash, assetflip shits, barely functional pieces of shit. Is an asset flip bought by six people worst than a disapointing game bought by millions? If you ask me any dragon quest before X has landed a hand in fucking over the JRPG genre by giving it an idea to the casual fan of what a JRPG was, because it never moved forward. It's way worst than being glitchy, because some people had this idea that a JRPG was some basic plot with a spiky haired teenager going from town to town, they missed plenty of incredible stories. So it's DQIX for me, but it won't be for most people.

"Bad" games that did way better than you would have expected?

Main Post:

"Bad" being short for "of subpar quality compared to competitors in its genre"

Not looking to name and shame. But I have been occasionally surprised to see great-looking games do poorer than expected and poor-looking games do better than expected. Sometimes it's better in other ways that arent immediately evident to anyone except the players, but sometimes it might just be better marketing from developers who know their audience.

Actually I'm really looking for a case of "holy shit this game has such poor appeal and would be so hard to market, how the hell did they get it into the hands of so many people" type of stories.

Again not looking to shit on anyone, just want some perspectives.

Edit: as an example I found the success of Kenshi to be very surprising. It was recommended to me several times by Steam but the graphics always drove me away despite myself being someone who liked the graphics of M&B Warband and Thief 2. The gameplay is excellent but I couldn't have known that because the graphics just told me "no." Regardless many other people bought and played the game and gave it a chance and that got many more to play it until it became so popular that plenty of streamers played it.

Does Kenshi deserve to be successful? Definitely. Is it surprising that it did so with such visually unappealing graphics? Also yes.

Top Comment: The Garten of Banban game(s?) is one of the strangest anomalies I've ever seen in gaming history. To compare to its peers: It didn't have the novel appeal and unique gameplay concept of FNAF, nor did it have the striking visuals and honestly pretty good (especially in the second game) character writing of Bendy, nor did it have the sheer technical polish of Poppy Playtime. But boy howdy did it explode to the point it's getting official merchandise from a fairly well known manufacturer. And the worst part is 100% get it, it's a technical nightmare with certain character models in the literal millions of polygons for no real reason (Nabnab is literally just a raw sculpt ported into the game), most of its assets are haphazardly bought and placed from a marketplace, and - outside of exceptions like Bittergiggle - most of the voice acting is super rough. But it's weirdly charming in a "so bad its good" way like Birdemic or The Room. It has the same energy you'd get from the lore and plotline of a child playing with a mish mash of all their Lego sets, a very "Oh no Captain Picard, we're being attacked by Darth Vader! We gotta get the Tri-Force from the Power Rangers!" type of feel where you're just kind of watching in morbid curiosity to see where the hell the roller coaster is gonna go next.

What’s the worst game you love anyway?

Main Post:

Name the absolute worst game or games you’ve played and loved, either despite or because of how bad it was.

Edit: A lot of interesting games mentioned here. I’m 100% going to be looking up all of the games in the comments that I haven’t played or heard of yet and try them out.

Top Comment: A tom and jerry fighting game on ps2/pc. I don't even remember the name but I put 100 hours in it.

The Obsession with Bad Games

Main Post: The Obsession with Bad Games

Top Comment:

Man, this video makes some great points.

One point that I appreciated was that toxicity about “bad” games has bled over into discussion of good games. I remember when BG3 released, seeing bizarre articles about how it was just such a pants-shittingly good game that it was making other developers mad (because now they would have to work harder to meet this “new standard”??).

But my biggest takeaway from this year is that I can’t trust user reviews as much as I used to. Fortunately, this realization has led me to find some great game critics who tend to mirror my preferences and don’t buy into hate or hype cycles.

What are some objectively bad games that you love?

Main Post: What are some objectively bad games that you love?

Top Comment: Resident evil 6. It’s an awful horror game, it’s story makes no sense and it relies too much on quick time events. That being said, it’s game play has a satisfying flow once you figure out the initial clunkiness and the constant over the top dumb action makes me so happy

Games so bad they're good

Main Post:

literally what the title says, I wanna play a game so ridiculously bad it becomes good (specially ones that are fun to play with a friend on my side)

Top Comment: Deadly Premonition Maybe not ridiculously bad to the extreme, but definitely ridicilous
